World Botanical Gardens Trails and Special Areas

Our gardens consist of approximately 300 acres, most of which is not yet opened to the public. Our plant collection presently consists of in excess of 5,000 species, making our gardens the largest on the Big Island. We will soon have the largest collection in the State.

Our collection (both in our Nursery, and in the gardens proper) is arranged phylogenetically, that is, in accordance with the family relationships, so that close families of plants are located next to each other, and within each family the close genera are located next to each other. A sampling of this arrangement may be seen at the Registration areas, beginning with the lowest order of plants which reproduce by spores, and culminating in the most advanced of the flowering plants.
